Meet the Colorado River Valley Idea Factory Cohort

The Colorado River Valley is a unique region of the state. Stretching from the luxury destinations of Aspen to the legacy energy communities of Parachute, the Valley is a complex tapestry of agriculture, tech, outdoor recreation, and small-town charm. Instead of focusing on the gap between its luxury destinations and legacy industries, the Colorado River Valley is building a new identity as a vibrant, integrated community.

To strengthen the connective tissue between these diverse communities, Startup Colorado, in partnership with the Colorado River Valley Economic Development Partnership (CRVEDP) and OEDIT, recently launched our early-stage Idea Factory accelerator program for the region. This framework provides the hands-on resources and guidance that founders need to scale their brands directly from their rural region and become drivers of regional economic development.

A Four-Week Skill Sprint

We designed the Idea Factory as a high-intensity skill sprint, helping local founders rapidly evaluate the viability of their concepts and prepare for advanced business development programming. Over four weeks, this cohort worked to move past assumptions and tackle the real-world challenges of building a business in the valley that they call home.

“Idea- and early-stage founders need dedicated time and space to pressure-test their thinking and explore what’s truly possible,” says program facilitator Lisa Pedersen. “Programs like the Idea Factory provide the early feedback and structured clarity that help founders sharpen their vision and move forward with confidence.”

Meet the Cohort

World Tech Innovations LLC

Aspen Vetter — New Castle, CO

Aspen Vetter is a designer and engineer specializing in consumer hardware that bridges the physical and digital worlds. Through World Tech Innovations, he is launching DUI Defender, a proactive tool that uses a physical lockbox and breathalyzer system to secure vehicle keys until a safe BAC is confirmed. Unlike reactive tools, DUI Defender is a voluntary system for anyone, from motorcyclists to fleet owners, that values clear decision-making.

Local Rez

Derek Hanrahan — Silt, CO

Local Rez provides a community-focused alternative to major online travel agencies that often extract significant revenue from local economies. Their Community License model replaces fragmented software and “pay-to-play” algorithms with a unified online booking platform powered by a single annual subscription. Instead of ceding control to outside giants, Local Rez empowers businesses to reclaim their guest data and prioritize visitor experiences. This shift ensures tourism revenue circulates locally, creating a sustainable digital front door that strengthens the entire regional economy.

The Local Healing House

Erin Murphy — Rifle, CO

Erin Murphy founded Local Healing House to fix a broken wellness industry that often underpays providers and overcharges clients. With over 25 years of experience, Erin developed a “House-Cation” model that brings personalized acupuncture, massage, and fitness directly to the client’s home. By eliminating spa overhead, her platform allows providers to keep up to 97% of their charges while offering clients a transparent, luxury experience. This model reclaims wellness for practitioners and high-achievers alike, focusing on health, healing, and safety.

Upstream AI

Katrina Engelsted — Glenwood Springs, CO

Katrina Engelsted is building technology for the teams that keep rural Colorado’s water running. Small utilities make up 98% of Colorado’s systems, yet most software is built for large cities with massive budgets. Upstream AI is an operational platform designed specifically for small-town operators, turning routine logs and binders of manuals into searchable, AI-powered trend analysis and compliance reports. Upstream AI is giving teams of one or two the tools of a major municipality to ensure that rural communities have the same operational excellence as Denver.

Cordonix CDX -1

Mark T. Mersman — Gunbarrel, CO

Mark Mersman is solving a critical gap in the energy sector: the lack of subsurface oversight for plugged oil and gas wells. His company, Cordonix, has developed the CDX-1, a patent-pending infrastructure system installed during plugging operations to provide a permanent observation point for long-term verification. While traditional sensors focus on active wells, Cordonix offers a practical, low-cost way for regulators and landowners to verify plug integrity for decades to come. Mark is working to bring this first-of-its-kind environmental safeguard to the oil patch.

  • Well Sorted — Ellie Cross, Durango
  • Hope On Wheels Mobile Mechanic — Priscilla Rodriguez, Silt
  • The Sensory ButterflyYanina Toranza-Viera, Rifle
  • Hope On Wheels Mobile Mechanic — Priscilla Rodriguez, Silt

The transformation of these entrepreneurs throughout the duration of the program was undeniable. We are excited to see the next chapter unfold for these founders and the lasting impact that their innovation will have on the Colorado River Valley.

“The most striking shift was in how founders talked about their work; messages tightened, vision sharpened, and energy grew week over week,” Pedersen noted. “By the end, each founder had moved from exploring possibilities to owning a clear and compelling direction and story.”
